Rabbit Facts
Normal Rabbit Facts
-
Domestic rabbits vary in temperament within the same breed, coming in sassy, romantic (horny),
friendly, and calm temperaments, among others.
-
While most breeds have upright ears, lop rabbits are a specific breed where the muscles that hold
their ears upright weaken with age. This makes them cuter.
-
Domestic rabbits eat a diet of hay, fresh grass (or other leafy greens like romaine lettuce), and
pellets, with occasional treats like banana or apple.
Cute Rabbit Facts
-
Domestic rabbits bond for life with each other ("husbun", "bunwife", among other names) once
neutered, and can grieve for months or even years after their spouse dies.
-
Dominance displays often involve one rabbit soliciting grooming from the other by pushing their head
under the others snout. The submissive rabbit is the one that cleans the dominant rabbit.
-
Despite being known for being stupid, rabbits love constant enrichment activities like stacked cups
or treat puzzles.
-
Domestic rabbits are highly social, and when they disapprove of another rabbit (or your) actions,
they practice something called "shunning", where they face away from you and ignore you, though
occasionally looking over their shoulder... it's adorable.
Terrible Rabbit Facts
-
The typical rabbit digestive process only lasts approximately 4 hours from mouth to butt. Given that
their primary food source is low energy hay, and they need to eat near-constantly, this also results
in near-constant pooping ("caecotropes", also known as "rabbit truffles"). They need to eat that,
too, to actually extract any energy. Like a cow chewing its cud after it comes out the other end.
-
Domestic rabbits reach sexual maturity at 12 weeks old, while the gestation period is also 12 weeks.
You can figure out the rest on your own.
-
Because of inbreeding, most lop rabbits suffer from both liver torsion (where a section of their
liver twists in on itself) and deafness in their lives.
- Domestic rabbits have almost no amygdala, and while this means they can bond emotionally with humans, it means they're also extremely unafraid of humans and can be easily trapped with banana and a blanket if found in the wild.
- Rabbits got the short end of the genetic stick, so the leading cause of death over five is typically uterine or testicular cancer. It's not because domestic rabbits are inbred, it's because their reproductive system is so active it eventually creates cancerous cells.
